Veneers are tooth-like shells either made of porcelain or resin. They are designed with the same shape, size, and color as your teeth to give them a natural appearance. They are a quick cosmetic fix to many dental issues.
Dental veneers are used to treat or hide misaligned, chipped, and discolored teeth. Porcelain veneers are stain-resistant, and that makes them more preferable to resin veneers. You should visit your dentist to know if you are a candidate for veneer installation or not.
For your doctor to install veneers on your teeth, you should have the following qualifications:
Desire to fix discolored, misaligned, and broken teeth
Desire to have a quick cosmetic fix to dental issues such as tooth whitening
Good oral hygiene
Sufficient tooth enamel
Ability to restrain yourself from crunching hard foods and chewing your nails
No issues with teeth clenching or grinding, especially during the night
In most cases, the dental veneer process is usually in three stages.
The first stage is where you visit your dentist for a checkup. Your doctor examines your teeth and determines if you are a good candidate for the procedure. If you qualify to get veneers, your doctor guides you on what you should expect after the procedure.
At this stage, your doctor can reshape the surface of your tooth. They may then request an X-ray, after which they make a mold that resembles your tooth. Your doctor ensures that the impression is the same size, color, and shape as your natural teeth for it to fit perfectly. Also, your speech pattern is established so as not to distort it.
After making the mold, your doctor can send it to the lab to manufacture the veneers. It takes at least two to four weeks to make a perfect veneer. In the meantime, your doctor can install temporary veneers, but that is optional.
Bonding is the last stage of installing veneers. During the procedure, your dentist can use anesthesia to reduce pain or any discomfort.
At this point, the veneers are already out of the lab and ready for installation. However, they may still need some adjustments. Therefore, your dentist can place them over your teeth to check if they fit perfectly. If not, they can adjust them by trimming until they are the same size as your natural teeth.
Before the bonding process begins, your doctor has to polish and clean your teeth. Then, the cement or bonding agent gets placed using a special light to activate the chemicals and harden the cement.
After the veneers are perfectly positioned, your dentist can remove any excess cement on the sides. Note that this is very crucial to avoid getting infections. Your doctor may request you to have several follow-up appointments to check the veneers’ progress and status.
